Jay McTaggart, 30, was listed in fair condition yet still considered a critical patient while awaiting surgery Saturday afternoon at Alaska Native Medical Center, said hospital spokeswoman Fiona Brosnan. McTaggert was taken to the hospital with life-threatening head injuries following the collision about 1:30 a.m., police said.

A blue 2001 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 21-year-old Shea Valles was driving northbound on Ingra when it struck McTaggart, police said. Witnesses outside the Pathfinder, as well as two of Valles' passengers, told officers that McTaggart was riding against traffic, police said.

Police do not believe alcohol was involved, according to a written statement from department spokesman Lt. Dave Parker. Valles showed no signs of impairment, Parker said.

Detectives will continue investigating, he said.
