Fairbanks council removes Alaska Day from holiday list

FAIRBANKS -- The Fairbanks City Council has voted to remove Alaska Day from the list of official holidays.

The vote arose from a situation in which city employees who belong to unions had to report to work on Alaska Day, while Mayor Jerry Cleworth and five other non-union city employees stayed home.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the council voted unanimously Monday to remove the Oct. 18 holiday from the list of official holidays for the city.

The unions gave up Alaska Day in exchange for a personal day that could be used anytime.

The six non-union employees will receive a personal day to compensate.

Alaska Day is the anniversary of the formal transfer of the territory from Russia to the United States on Oct. 18, 1867.
