Aukusitino, Feckley top all-state football team

Aukusitino, who threw for 2,471 yards in 11 games, was named offensive player of the year by coaches after helping Service march to its sixth state championship and 10-0-1 record.

The new passing record belongs to Feckley, however, who topped all passers with 2,559 yards in 10 games. The previous record belonged to Juneau's Chris Hinkley, who threw for 2,289 yards in 2005.

The large-school defensive player of the year was Lah Fifita, who helped the Crimson Bears reach the semifinals for the eighth time in nine years.

First-year coaches Jeff Trotter of East and Kent Rilatos of Wasilla shared coach of the year honors -- both turned around struggling programs and led them to rare playoff appearances.

The well-rounded game of Kenai's A.J. Hull earned him several accolades, including offensive player of the year for medium and small schools. He also made the all-state first team as a quarterback, defensive back and return specialist in leading the Kardinals to the first medium-school state title.

Homer fell to Kenai in that title game, but coach Cam Wyatt was named coach of the year. Wyatt led the Mariners to their first championship game appearance and achieved some massive mid-season glory by beating Kenai for the first time since 1992.

Medium and small schools defensive player of the year was Austin Tennis of Soldotna. The defensive back helped Soldotna terrorize opponents throughout an undefeated regular season. The Stars allowed just 67 points, the lowest total in the Northern Lights Conference, and they didn't lose a game until Kenai beat them in the state semifinals.
