Gun-crazy Alaska has previously ranked high on the Violence Policy Center's lists of per-capita gun violence. But the group's latest report, based on 2008 data, puts Alaska at the very top of the gun-deaths list with 20.64 per 100,000 residents. That's more than a point ahead of No. 2 Mississippi, with a 19.32 score, and about double the national average. The VPC, a Washington nonprofit, links high per-capita gun deaths to high gun ownership rates and weak gun-control laws. The rankings include suicide and accidental shootings. Kristen Rand of the VPC told KDLG in Dillingham that the Alaska rate was the highest per-capita the group has ever recorded -- a "stunning" number, she said.
