Jackson Ursin claimed two convincing individual victories for Dimond on Saturday, helping the Lynx sweep the Cook Inlet Conference swimming and diving championships for the second straight year.

Ursin cruised at the Bartlett High pool, winning the boys 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 47:16 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:52:91. Both times were state best's for the season.

"I took a good pace over the first 100," Ursin said of his victory in the 200. "I slowly backed off over the last 100. I wanted to save it for next week."

Winning an event at the CIC championships automatically earns swimmers a spot in the state championships that begin Friday at Bartlett High. Everyone else finds out today if their times are fast enough to get them to state.

While Ursin's victories lacked drama, there was no shortage of excitement elsewhere.

East junior Jesi Cavanaugh won the girls 100-yard butterfly by just .09 seconds, edging Dimond's Jennifer Wilcox with a time of 59.67 seconds. Cavanaugh said she knew Wilcox was close, so she had to turn up the intensity.

"The emotions definitely take over," she said. "She's a great swimmer and I knew she would give me a good race. We race all year long."

Spectators were at their loudest and many were on their feet to watch the 50 free, the shortest races of the championship.

Service's Mary Uselmann won the girls event in 24.56 seconds and said there is a reason for all the excitement.

"The short ones are the best," she said. "It can come down to just hundredths of a second."

In the 50 free, swimmers are only required to go the length of the pool and back, which means they attack the water at a frantic pace.

Dimond senior Austin Hummel won the boys 50 free in 22.38 and was greeted by bear hugs from smiling teammates when he got out of the pool. Hummel said his teammates get just as excited about the event as the spectators, but he doesn't let all the cheering distract him.

"I can't even pay attention to that," he said. "It's always fun to be part of the popular event."

The win was Hummel's first at the CIC championships and he is eagerly anticipating his shot at a state title.

"It would be an accomplishment," the senior said. "Especially since last year I got DQ'd for a false start."

Cory Chan of Dimond also claimed his first CIC title Saturday. The junior recorded Alaska's top time this season in the boys 100 butterfly, a 54.76 that was just good enough to beat South's Alexander Emili (55.04).

"I could kind of see his hands in the corner of my eye," Chan said. "So, I tried to finish strong."

Dimond diver Cade Bennett performed some dazzling aerial maneuvers on his way to a convincing victory with 425.05, nearly 30 points ahead of anyone else.

"I felt really good until the last three dives," he said.

The last three dives were only recently added to Bennett's repertoire. The junior decided to use the new dives because of the heightened level of competition and because he wants to use them at the state meet.

"The back 11/2, I've only been working on for a couple of weeks," he said. "State will be based around the same set of dives."

Dimond dive coach Allison Sharp said this is Bennett's best season, something that's especially gratifying because he missed most of last season with a herniated disc in his back. Extra yoga workouts and strength training has Bennett's back feeling good again.
