Tracking caribou, shooting hoops, winning trophies (The New York Times): Basketball is so important in the Chukchi Sea village of Point Hope, it's almost considered a subsistence activity. "We were an awesome passing team once we started playing in the gym," former boys coach Rex Rock tells The Times, "because you can't dribble in the snow."

Thawing permafrost microbes could control climate (New Scientist): As the Arctic permafrost melts over the coming decades, long-frozen microorganisms will thaw out and start feasting on the soil. The first have already begun to wake up -- and early signs are that they will have a major impact on how Earth's climate changes.

Canadian running mag lists Sitka among global destinations (KCAW, Sitka): The editor of Canadian Running magazine says runners are "a different breed," and Sitka runners are even more different. Alaskans return home after being stranded at Everest base camp (KTUU): Andy Baugh of Anchorage was stranded along with his father, brother and many climbers for six days by bad weather in the Mount Everest base camp. Striking up a friendship with a helicopter pilot helped put the Baughs among the first to get out.
