Video: Young and historian trade insults in House hearing on ANWR

A House Natural Resources Committee hearing Friday on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain got hot when Alaska Rep. Don Young traded insults with Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, author of "The Quiet World: Saving Alaska's Wilderness Kingdom." "How exactly did Rep. Don Young and Douglas Brinkley get off on the wrong foot?" wonders The Washington Post. "Was it when the Alaska Republican called the historian's testimony 'garbage'? Or was it when Brinkley talked back? From that point, it was on - a verbal smackdown that startled the most jaded staffers." Watch the video here -- the main battle occurs in the first couple of minutes. Or if you'd rather read a transcript, go to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Young has been in a confrontational mood lately. Last week he wore a beanie cap as a slap at the Obama administration's energy policy during a hearing in which Interior Secretary Ken Salazar was testifying. Salazar didn't rise to the insult bait.
