Cedar Bourgeois wins 28-mile trail race in California

She may be retired from the storied Mount Marathon race in her hometown, but Cedar Bourgeois of Seward on Saturday proved she's still wicked fast on trails featuring arduous ascents and descents. Bourgeois, 35, won the 28.4-mile Quad Dipsea race in Marin County, California, covering the course that features nearly 9,300 vertical feet of climbing and an equal amount of descent. She was clocked in 4 hours, 59 minutes, 18 seconds, which earned her the women's victory by more than seven minutes.

Bourgeois won Mount Marathon, the annual Fourth of July grind up and down the 3,022-foot peak overlooking Resurrection Bay, seven straight times from 2004-2010 before retiring from the event that draws thousands of spectators.

Saturday, 2010 men's Mount Marathon champion Matias Saari of Anchorage, finished third overall in the Quad Dipsea. Saari, 41, finished in 4:12:24. Leor Pantlat of San Carlos, Calif., won in a race-record 3:48:58 on a looped course in Mill Valley in an event that has been contested since 1983. The race is limited to 250 entrants.
