The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports hunting will be banned near the Steese and Taylor highways.

Department of Fish and Game biologists reported seeing large numbers of caribou Friday along the Steese.

Tok area biologist Jeff Gross said about two-thirds of caribou with satellite collars were north of Birch between Twelve Mile Summit and Central.

He said opening the hunt in that area would allow hunters to exceed the winter hunting quota in one day.

Limiting hunting close to the highways will slow down the hunt and more hunters will be able to get into the field, he said.

Information on restricted areas can be obtained from the department.
