Troopers said 31-year-old Moose Pass resident Sarah Brueckner was headed northbound with seven children in a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line and struck a pickup head-on about 9:40 p.m.
The other driver, 46-year-old Seward resident Robert Washburn, was trapped inside the 1992 Chevrolet pickup he was driving, and emergency responders had to extricate him, troopers said. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, troopers said.
Washburn was taken to a Seward hospital, where he later died, troopers said. A medical examiner in Anchorage will conduct an autopsy on Washburn's body, troopers said.
A 2-year-old passenger in the Suburban was treated at the hospital for minor injuries, and there were no other injuries reported, troopers said.
The Bureau of Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
