Five young Alaskans have received college scholarship accounts through the University of Alaska College Savings Plan. The giveaway, in its second year, was aimed at encouraging more families to set aside half of their Permanent Fund dividends for higher education costs. According to a news release, everyone who checked "yes" on line six of this year's PFD applications and put half their PFD into a college savings plan was entered in the drawing.
Four winners received $2,500 accounts. They are Ashlyne Miller, 12, of Sitka; Megan Kenner, 14, of Anchorage; Nicole Vanni, 18, of Anchorage and Tyler Johnson, 19, of Sterling. Logan Smith, 12, of Seward, won a $25,000 account.
Use of the scholarship funds isn't restricted to UA.
