In one of them, defending champion New Stuyahok outlasted Lumen Christi of Anchorage to keep alive its bid for a second straight title in the Class 1A-2A tournament. The Eagles won the first two sets but Lumen Christi battled back before falling 25-23, 25-15, 24-26, 18-25, 15-11.
Two of the five-set matches came in the Mixed Six tournament, which is for co-ed teams. Noatak knocked off Golovin, last year's runnerup, 21-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 16-14, and Aniak outlasted Scammon Bay, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8.
Action continues today at 9 a.m. Semifinals in the 1A-2A tournament are at 5 p.m. (New Stuyahok vs. Klawock) and 6:45 p.m. (Cook Inlet Academy vs. Kenny Lake and semifinals in the Mixed Six tournament are at 1:30 p.m. (Unalakleet vs. Glacier View) and 3:15 p.m. (Aniak vs. Noatak).
The Mixed Six title match is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday, with the 1A-2A title match at 6:30 p.m.
