These are funds managed by Alaska Community Foundation, but with local advisory boards, said Candace Winkler, president and CEO of the statewide foundation.
Currently there are five such funds, serving the Chilkat Valley, Talkeetna, Petersburg, Seward and the Kenai Peninsula. Combined, they have total assets of more than $3.7 million.
The Rasmuson Foundation is contributing $2 million to help with the start-up of three to four more community funds, said Winkler. There will be an application process in the spring to identify which communities will participate, she said.
Altogether, the Alaska Community Foundation manages 280 charitable funds that total more than $50 million. The funds they oversee include the Alaska Children's Trust and the newly formed Anchorage School Foundation.
