Troopers in Soldotna got a report just after 8 a.m. of the crash near Mile 22 of East End Road in Voznesenka Village, home to a Christian sect of Russian Old Believers.
Troopers say this is what happened:
Peter Basargin, 23, of Homer, was westbound on East End Road in a 2005 Ford F-150. Cornily Reutov, 45, of Homer, was going the same way in a 2003 Honda Pilot.
Both vehicles tried to head up the hill near Voznesenka Road. The F-150, which troopers say wasn't equipped with winter tires, started sliding downhill and crashed into the front of the Honda. Both vehicles then slid down into a ditch.
Agafia Polushkin, 94, of Homer, was riding in the Honda and was killed in the crash, troopers said. She was not wearing a seat belt. A second person riding in the Honda was taken to South Peninsula Hospital for injuries that troopers said were not life threatening.
Troopers say they are continuing to investigate but haven't found evidence that alcohol or drugs was a factor.
