UAF hopes to buy hangar for aviation program

FAIRBANKS -- The University of Alaska Fairbanks wants to buy an aircraft hangar at Fairbanks International Airport. The hangar would give a training boost to students in UAF's aviation maintenance program.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner said officials were given permission last week by the UA Board of Regents to pursue a deal. The hangar is owned by Alaska Aerofuel and located west of the airport's main terminal. The borough has assessed the value of the hangar at about $578,000.

If UAF and Alaska Aerofuel can reach a purchase agreement for the unused hangar, the school would remodel the two-story, 100-by-100-foot building to house classes. The aviation program could potentially move into the hangar next summer.
