HOPE -- An electrical lineman trying to restore power after one of the recent big windstorms fell into a ravine, suffered a serious chest injury and had to be medevacked by an Alaska Air National Guard crew, Alaska State Troopers said Monday. Gary Griffith, 32 and a Chugach Electric lineman, was working Friday afternoon on downed electrical lines on a mountain near the Hope Highway at Mile 1.5. He fell about 16 feet, landing on a stump and injuring his chest, troopers said.
Troopers, U.S. Forest Service officers and medics from Moose Pass and Cooper Landing came on snowmachines to help, troopers said.
Griffith was in a difficult spot on a 90-degree cliff. A helicopter from the 210th rescue squadron National Guard was dispatched. The crew took him to Providence Alaska Medical Center, troopers said.
