By half past midnight the Tap Root was besieged by dozens of fully decked-out Santas, reindeer men in velour jumpsuits and scantily-clad elves in thigh-high striped tights and suspenders. A wave of them dispersed amongst bewildered bar patrons, dropping Christmas balls and scattering fistfuls of tinsel. ...
This has been going on for years, one Santa informed me. "Carp" was a youngish Santa, with a tawny beard peeking out from under his luxurious white strap-on. There used to be two rival Santa groups, he said -- Fairview and Spenard. This year, for the first time, they joined forces and by all accounts looked to be getting along like holly and ivy, tagging buildings with spray-on fake snow, inviting comely lads and lasses to sit on their laps and hitting each other with enormous candy canes in bar parking lots.
