Jesse Evans called emergency dispatchers at about 8:30 a.m. Friday to say someone was breaking into his home and that the unknown robber had fired two shots through the front door, troopers said. When troopers arrived, they found Evans, 56, under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication.

The robbery report turned out to be unfounded, a troopers spokeswoman said.

Evans admitted to shooting through his own door, accidentally striking his dog, Nuka. A local veterinarian performed surgery on the mid-sized brown dog for a single gunshot wound, troopers said.

Nuka is expected to survive. An investigation of weapons misconduct continues, troopers said.
