Commission asks that logging road be rejected

Published: December 24, 2011

KODIAK -- A logging company's proposal for a new road in Chiniak faces an uphill battle.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports the Kodiak Island Borough's planning and zoning commission has recommended that the full assembly deny the logging road.

A-1 Timber wants a road that enters and exits at Silver Beach, a popular recreation area. The company wants the road in order to fulfill its four-year, $15 million contract to harvest 100 million board feet of timber. It proposes the road to avoid replacing a bridge over a salmon stream and possibly causing disruptions.

Fifteen landowners testified this week against the road, saying it would disrupt a quiet neighborhood and the beach.
