No bystanders apparently witnessed the accident or its immediate aftermath. Instead, the fatal wreck was discovered by a trooper patrolling the highway about 3:10 p.m. He called for an ambulance and additional troopers, according to a prepared statement from trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters.
Peters said an economy-sized Ford car was traveling southbound on the Sterling Highway when it crossed the center line for unknown reasons. The vehicle spun sideways and was struck on the driver's side by an SUV traveling in the northbound lane.
The trooper attempted to save the life of the Ford driver but was unsuccessful, Peters said. The driver, the only occupant of the Ford, was declared dead at the scene.
Both Cooper Landing and Moose Pass EMS responded.
The SUV was occupied by an adult driver and three minor passengers. All four were transported to Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna with what are believed to be non- life-threatening injuries.
Names were being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
The Sterling Highway was expected to remain closed in both directions until 11 p.m. Thursday while troopers investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the collision. Due to the location of the wreck, troopers are unable to route traffic around the scene.
Motorists are encouraged to check the 511.alaska.gov website before setting out on the highways for the most up-to-date information regarding road conditions and closures.
