Honey buckets remain a sanitation concern in Bethel

A Bethel City Council member says the city hasn't been tough enough in prosecuting residents who don't connect their homes to the sewer system. The city, with more than 6,000 residents, requires all to obtain sewer service and offers financial assistance to those struggling to pay for it, reports KYUK.

"I know that there's between 70 and 110 people who are not currently receiving those services," [Mary] Sattler said at the council meeting.

Sattler called the use of honey buckets, which are typically five-gallon buckets with a toilet seat on top, unsanitary and unsafe for the community.

"Some households are dumping their honey buckets in dumpsters. Some households are dumping their honey buckets in the river and brown slough or in back of their house," she said.
