Manslaughter charged after teen dies of drug overdose

Anchorage Daily NewsJanuary 3, 2012

A 26-year-old Anchorage man who police say injected a fatal dose of heroin into a 14-year-old girl Dec. 22 has been indicted for manslaughter, according to the Anchorage District Attorney.

Sean Warner already faced a drug-related felony for shooting up Jena Dolstad and is now charged with causing her death.

Police say Warner was sharing a gram of a particularly potent form of heroin known as "China White" with several people, including Dolstad, who did not want to inject herself, police said. After a few attempts, Warner shot her up while the girl laid on his bed, and a witness found her face down in vomit the next morning, according to charging documents.

Hours later, Warner called 911, and paramedics rushed Dolstad to a hospital, the charges say. Police say an officer later found drug paraphernalia that Warner tried to hide behind a nearby restaurant. Dolstad was kept alive by a ventilator for about six days and died Dec. 29, police said. A friend described her as an aspiring lyricist and said she was a freshman at Service High School.

Warner's aunt and uncle said Warner is a Navy veteran who served in Afghanistan and now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

He faces a possible prison sentence of seven to 11 years, a fine of $250,000 or both if convicted of manslaughter, according to the District Attorney's Office. Warner is also charged with first-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance, which carries the possibility of five to 99 years behind bars, and evidence tampering, with a possible sentence of zero to five years.
