No alarm

Through the back bedroom window, snow-laden birch and one tall spruce made a textured white wall in the morning darkness. Arm around my youngest son, who had awakened cold and asked me to lie down with him, I waited for six and knew I'd steal some minutes past the discipline of early-to-rise.

Warm, Joe slept. Conscience didn't. It was just the second day of school after Christmas break. I should have been up.

I paid for the time with dull worries. Antifreeze leak, gas bill. Couldn't manage a doze.

As I stared at the trees a shooting star cut less than a second's fire in the blue-black spaces between snowy limbs. Worries burned up in the atmosphere. If I'd been up at the crack of whenever, I'd have missed the meteor. Conscience conceded the point. I made coffee in peace.
