Heading out for a run at 33 below? Start with warm shoes

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner outdoors editor Tim Mowry was coerced by his wife and son into participating in the annual New Year's Eve Run. Even though the temperature was minus 30-something, it wasn't so bad, he writes. His speedy wife, however, made the mistake of heading to the starting line with shoes that had been left outside for weeks. From the News-Miner:

Logan managed to stay on course and ended up winning the race by a comfortable margin, at least as comfortable as it gets at 33 below.

Kristan finished third overall, with Logan still in her sights, and won the women's race, which marked her first-ever victory in a running race. ...

It wasn't until [later] that Kristan realized her feet weren't warming up. At first, she thought she had a piece of cardboard stuck in her boot but then discovered it was her toes.

When she took off her socks, one of her big toes was as white as chalk.
