To further your grape explorations, I give you Carmenere, one of the six original Bordeaux grape varieties. There's not much in France anymore, but it has survived nicely in Chile. See if you can find Ventisquero's 2010 Carmenere Reserva. Given the different growing season in South America, this would be a 2009 in the northern hemisphere. The wine is nicely distinct: Herb and leaf aromatics define the Carmenere experience. Black cherry, high-toned fruit, palate heft and lightly drying tannins complete the picture of this very black wine. Serve with beef. Costs about $14.
