UAA freshmen shine in gymnastics

UAA's freshmen made a nice first impression Sunday in the gymnastics team's season-opener at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Sariaye Jensen, a freshman from Henderson, Nev., kicked off her UAA career by capturing all-around honors and two other freshmen came up big when two regulars were injured in pre-meet warmups.

Jensen won the uneven parallel bars on her way to the all-around victory, which in turn helped UAA to a comfortable team triumph over SUNY Cortland. The Seawolves scored 187.95 points to Cortland's 183.8.

UAA played hurt -- the Seawolves lost senior all-arounder Kathleen Mantell and sophomore Emily Petersen, who competes in three events, when each was injured during warmups, but freshmen Jeanette Conrad and Morgan Cook stepped up in their absence. Conrad finished third in beam and fifth in bars and Cook grabbed fifth in floor.

"I was really impressed with how our freshmen performed in the face of adversity today," UAA coach Paul Stoklos said in a press release. "To have two key gymnasts go down, and then manage to come just short of 188 points, that's a solid showing. If we can get healthy, I feel good about our chances this year."

Besides Jensen's win in the uneven parallel bars (9.7 points), sophomore Melissa Doucette and senior Kaelei Spoor shared the floor exercise win with scores of 9.65.

For Cortland, Marrison Goodstein topped the vault (9.725) and Elise Konikoff won the balance beam (9.55).

Jensen edged Doucette in the all-around standings with 37.825 points. Doucette finished with 37.775.

The teams meet again Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
