PETERSBURG -- Petersburg officials are upset over a large number of criminal cases being dismissed by the Juneau district attorney's office.

The council will consider sending a letter of concern to Gov. Sean Parnell this month.

KFSK reported that there are assistant district attorneys in Juneau who are handling about 600 cases across the northern part of Southeast Alaska.

In 2010, about 30 percent of the Petersburg cases were dismissed, up from 18 percent in 2005. Officials brought their concern to the district attorney but last year the dismissal rate increased to 38 percent.

The DA's office says sometimes the cases are resolved but not to the Petersburg police department's liking. Sometimes decisions to dismiss are made on caseload, seriousness of the cases and the likelihood of winning at trial.
