Kenai courthouse closed because of suspicious package

KENAI -- A suspicious package has been mailed to the Kenai Peninsula Borough courthouse.

The Peninsula Clarion says that after the package was opened Monday afternoon by courthouse employees, the Kenai Fire Department was called immediately.

Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters says courthouse employees are not expected to return to the building until the contents of the package have been identified.

Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness spokesperson Jeremy Zidek says the state department has been told it is a "white-powder incident."
