State flags to be lowered in honor of former legislator who died

State flags will be lowered Thursday to honor a former state labor commissioner and lawmaker. Gov. Sean Parnell's office said in a release that former state Rep. Edmund "Ed" Orbeck died Friday in Arizona. He was 96. The governor's office said he was the labor commissioner for Gov. Jay Hammond, serving in that role for eight years, beginning in 1975. He also served five terms in the state House and was active in Fairbanks politics.
