Cherry, who attended High Point University and runs professionally for ZAP Fitness Reebok, a North Carolina-based team, qualified for the Olympic Trials with his ninth-place finish in October at the Rock n' Roll San Jose Half-Marathon. In that race, he clocked 1:04:52, eight seconds faster than the 13.1-mile standard that served as one of the Olympic Trials marathon qualifying standards.

The San Jose race was won by Meb Keflezighi, 36, who won Saturday's marathon in 2:09:08.
