Johansson nears UAA basketball victory milestone

WOMEN: Senior can move into second on wins list.

By the time Hanna Johansson and the UAA women's basketball team finish a four-game homestand that begins tonight, Johansson is all but guaranteed to record her 98th career victory with the Seawolves, which will rank her second on the list of the winningest women to wear a basketball uniform for the Seawolves.

Johansson, a 6-foot-2 senior from Gothenburg, Sweden, racked career win No. 97 last weekend when the Seawolves beat Western Washington. That ties her with Rebecca Kielpinski, the All-America center who was a senior during Johansson's freshman year.

UAA plays Western Oregon tonight and Saint Martin's on Saturday, the first of four straight games at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Ranked 14th in the nation, the Seawolves are 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and odds are excellent that they'll win at least one of their next four games and vault Johansson past Kielpinski.

Getting Johnasson to the top of the list will take some doing, but it could happen.

Nikki Aden, who finished her four-year career last season, boasts 110 victories in 130 games played, which are school records in both categories.

UAA has 11 regular-season games left, so even if the Seawolves win them all, Johansson would be at 108 wins. Catching Aden would then require two wins in the postseason, which begins with the GNAC tournament early next month. Beating Aden would require three wins in the postseason.

If UAA plays at least four games in the postseason -- and if Johansson plays in them all -- Johansson will beat Aden's record for most games played. Johansson has played 116 games so far, 14 behind Aden.

Both of this week's opponents are in the bottom half of the GNAC standings. Western Oregon is 4-13 overall and 3-4 in the conference and Saint Martins is 7-10, 2-5 going into a game tonight against UAF in Fairbanks.

The UAA men face the same teams, only on the road. Both games begin at 6 p.m.

The Seawolves (11-4, 5-2) are coming off a patchy stretch during which they've lost two out of three games, including their last one, a 73-68 home loss to conference leader Western Washington (16-3, 7-1 after Wednesday's win over Central Washington).

Tonight the Seawolves face second-place Western Oregon (13-3, 6-1). A win would put the Seawolves a half-game out of first place.
