The seating arrangement is in keeping with a push, led by Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mark Udall, to permanently end the tradition of seating along party lines for the president's annual address to Congress.
Snowe, in a news release, said she and Begich have both worked to set aside partisan politics to do what's best for their states, and for the nation. She said the seating arrangement is a symbolic gesture but said she hopes her colleagues can pursue a similar form of bipartisanship during this year's legislative session.
