The festivities got under way Thursday at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium, which is where most of the concerts will take place over the next couple of weekends. As is generally the case, each weekend features a different headliner playing a number of sets around town.
Tonight, Scottish fiddler Hanneke Cassel and her trio anchor a lineup that also includes the Spenard Road String Quartet, Bootleg Brown and Full Sail among others. That concert is 7- 10 p.m. today at Wendy Williamson, with a late-night jam to follow at the Spenard Roadhouse until 2 a.m.
Traditional music will also fill smaller haunts around town during the following Folk Week, with Out North, McGinley's Pub, Organic Oasis, Tap Root and a number of other venues hosting performances.
Bluegrass mavens Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen headline next weekend's Wendy Williamson shows, joined Saturday, Jan. 28, by locals Marian Call, High Lonesome Sound, Matt Hammer with Mz Lona and many more before bringing the festival to a close the following Sunday night.
University of Alaska Anchorage radio station KRUA 88.1 FM will broadcast the Wendy Williamson concerts, which will also be streaming on kruaradio.org.
