Gebhardt and his team of 12 dogs left at 9:13 p.m. after a 56-minute stay at the checkpoint.
Buser was the first to reach Kalskag -- he got there at 8:09 p.m., followed by Gebhardt at 8:17 -- but he spent 13 more minutes there than Gebhardt before giving chase with his 12-dog team at 9:18 p.m.
Next to leave Kalskag were a pair of Iditarod champions -- John Baker at 9:31 p.m. and Lance Mackey at 10:16.
Mackey actually beat Baker to Kalskag by 48 minutes but he spent nearly two hours at the checkpoint. He arrived with 14 dogs and left with 10, while Baker dropped two animals and is down to 12 dogs.
The 300-mile race began Friday night in Bethel and should end sometime Monday afternoon. The race goes from Bethel to Aniak and back.
The Kusko's two companion races ended Saturday.
Jennifer Peeks of Bethel became the first woman to win the 150-mile Bogus Creek 150, clocking 17 hours, 41 minutes, 19 seconds to beat Lewis Pavilla by a little more than 10 minutes.
Victory in the 30-mile Akiak Dash went to Ray Nose.
