Taylor Rohde posted his eighth double-double of the season, racking 20 points and 10 rebounds, to help keep the Seawolves in a second-place tie halfway through the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season.
Rohde, a 6-foot-9 senior center, rebounded from a Thursday outing against Western Oregon in which foul trouble limited him to four points in 10 minutes of playing time. He hit half of his 12 shots from the field and sank 8 of 10 from the foul line.
Rohde's effort came on a night when UAA's long-range shooters, who hit 10 of 24 from 3-point range in the win against Western Oregon, were mostly silent. Against Saint Martin's, UAA hit only three treys.
"They're showing they can win in different ways," UAA coach Rusty Osborne said. "We can't be stereotyped as a team that wins with 3s or a team that wins with Taylor.
"It's always good when you can have success in different ways."
Osborne said defense made the difference in the game. He said Saint Martin's broke the 50-point barrier only because of a flurry of points at the very end.
"It was 29-23 at the half, and about half their points came off broken plays or second shots," he said.
UAA (13-4 overall, 7-2 GNAC) forced many of the Saints' 15 turnovers. Nine times they stole the ball outright, with five players coming up with steals.
The Seawolves outrebounded the Saints 35-28 and got points from all 10 players. Kyle Fossman sank two of three from 3-point range for 12 and Steve White added nine points.
Brok Pendleton tallied 15 points and six rebounds for Saint Martin's (8-10, 4-5), which entered the game on a three-game winning streak.
The pair of road games came at the right time for the Seawolves, who had lost two of three before the road trip.
"We put two really great physical efforts together," Osborne said.
The Seawolves fly home today but hit the road again Wednesday for games against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday and Central Washington on Saturday. Osborne said the team needs to make the quick trip back home because a new semester began this week and he doesn't want players to miss too many classes. Players will attend classes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning before flying back to Seattle.
"They can't afford to miss the beginning of school," Osborne said. "It's one of those things we have to do."
