Pizza days are a big deal in Yukon River village

There's no pizza delivery in Galena; the Yukon River village isn't on the Alaska road system, and its fast-food joint specializes in burgers. So it's no surprise that teenagers are coming up with a solution: Students at the Galena Interior Learning Academy, a boarding school, run a pizza restaurant a couple times a month, reports the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. They make the pizzas, and they also learn the business of selling pizzas.

Chef Rand Rosecrans led the high school culinary students in their restaurant endeavors on [a recent] Friday, helping make pizzas throughout the day so they could be sold throughout the weekend. Rosecrans, the school's culinary arts instructor and food services manager, said they have pizza weekends about every other week. ...

The students also learn about ordering the food and supplies, including the cardboard.

"They're seeing that everything that comes out here, you have to pay for it," Rosecrans said.
