Finding wines of depth and complexity at an affordable price is the goal of this article, but the problem is they don't always show up. We're lucky this week because of the 2008 Columbia Crest Amitage. It's a great blend of 54 percent merlot, 19 percent syrah, 7 percent cabernet franc, 5.5 percent cabernet sauvignon and 4.5 percent malbec, aged in 25 percent new oak for 16 months. This wine has great grip and vigor. Lovely tannins that you don't usually get at this level play very nicely with the deep black fruits, wood and luscious viscosity -- beautiful use of resources. Costs about $12.
