Markel leads Alaskans in alpine skiing

Gabrielle Markel of the Alyeska Ski Club led a group of Alaska skiers on the first day of racing in the Western Region elite FIS tech series in Utah on Thursday, placing 19th in a women's giant slalom race at Park City.

Jordan Lane placed 30th and Sydney Henegan attacked from the back to finish 32nd after starting 72nd.

In men's racing at nearby Snowbird Mountain, Dylan Fox was the only Alaskan to finish two runs, placing 68th.

The race series is a qualifier for the U.S. national championships. It continues through Sunday.

Women's giant slalom -- 1) Maria Camilla Fraschini (Westminster College), 2:02.85. Alaska finishers -- 19) Gabrielle Markel, 2:08.10; 30) Jordan Lane, 2:13.63; 32) Sydney Henegan, 2:14.60. Men's giant slalom -- 1) Olle Friberg (Rocky Mountain College), 1:30.53. Alaska finisher -- 68) Dylan Fox, 1:45.25.
