Keegan Messing of Girdwood skated to fifth place in the men's short program Friday night at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, Calif.
Messing scored 76.66 points and was less than three points behind fourth-place Ross Miner of Boston (78.9). Two-time national champion Jeremy Abbott of Detroit grabbed a commanding lead with 90.23 points.
The long program is scheduled to begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. AST. Messing's long program is likely to part of NBC's television coverage, which airs at 11 a.m. in Anchorage on Channel 2.
