Girdwood's Keegan Messing slipped to seventh place after Sunday's freeskate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, Calif.
Messing, who just turned 20, was in fifth place after Friday's short program.
He struggled with his jumps in the freeskate and placed 12th with 135.81 points. Combined with his short program result, he finished with 212.47 points in the final standings and was less than one point behind sixth-place Stephen Carriere of Boston.
Messing is a member of the Alaska Association of Figure Skaters.
