Richard Smith, 21, surrendered at police headquarters, according to a statement.

He was wanted on assault charges for allegedly stabbing 56-year-old Thomas Atkinson Jr. at the man's apartment in the 700 block of North Flower Street in Mountain View early Sunday morning.

Police say Smith stabbed Atkinson multiple times in the back while the two were drinking with friends at the victim's apartment.

Atkinson then staggered up the street and collapsed at a neighbor's doorstep, said APD spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is still in the hospital, Parker said.

Detectives are still investigating the motive for the attack.

Smith is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
