Doctors initially believed Thomas Atkinson Jr., 56, would survive.

Police say an acquaintance, 21-year-old Richard Smith, stabbed Atkinson multiple times in the back while the two were drinking with friends early Sunday morning at Atkinson's apartment on the 700 block of North Flower Street in Mountain View.

Atkinson staggered a block down the street and collapsed on a neighbor's doorstep.

Smith turned himself in to police on Sunday night.

He was arraigned on assault charges Monday and is in Department of Corrections custody.

Additional charges may come after the autopsy definitively determines Atkinson's cause of death, said APD spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.
