ALASKA'S NEWSPAPER

Central Park wilderness issue highlights misplaced priorities

Too bad our Legislature doesn't come with a warranty. I am certain we Alaskans could get our money back for this current one. As if we don't have serious issues facing this state and as a slap across the face of any Alaskan who expects them to produce, this week a few of these imperious "statesmen" actually are pondering a bipartisan legislative resolution recommending Central Park in New York City become a federal wilderness.

We often never see issues finally resolved after hearings and debate. We more often see individual legislators exercising de facto veto power over legislation by refusing to hear bills with no explanation given. We are shown the number of bills introduced and passed but not the numbers defeated, combined with other bills or withdrawn. We see ghostly manipulations of the system and then wait to hear terms like "traction" and "fast track" to indicate resolution.

Next November I plan to get my money back. I hope many of you will join me.
