Lambert based her work on a more-than-century-old study of Tlingit by American anthropologist John R. Swanton, a good starting point but not an authoritative guide to pronunciation, experts say.
Swanton couldn't hear many of the sounds in Tlingit so he didn't write it, so [Lambert] didn't speak them. Swanton didn't put tone marks in his writing, so [Lambert] doesn't know where the tone marks go," Tlingit scholar Roby Littlefield tells KCAW.
