ALASKA'S NEWSPAPER

State officials should remember where their responsibilities rest

There is no misunderstanding about the proposed change of the Department of Natural Resources mission statement as reported by the ADN early last week.

It is exactly what it appears to be -- a back-door, underhanded method to enable the fast-tracking of the development of Alaska's natural resources for the benefit of development companies at the expense of present and future Alaskans' economy and quality of life.

Between DNR Commissioner Dan Sullivan and Gov. Sean Parnell, who is willing to give away our resources, I'm sure they'll have a future with the oil and mining companies upon leaving government service.

However, they should remember who they still work for and their responsibility to the State of Alaska.

If they really want to do something to make Alaska a better place to live, it's time to change the royalty percentages for mining companies, bringing them up to date with this century and to stop this wholesale all-expenses-paid giveaway of our state resources.
