I was pleased to hear that Alaska's EPA regional administrator Dennis McLerran is in town as a keynote speaker at a conference (Alaska Forum on the Environment). Like all Alaskans, my family values salmon fisheries, especially Bristol Bay. As an educator and teacher in Alaska, I particularly appreciate McLerran speaking to the public on the importance of science in policy and resources management. Moreover, I would like to thank Mr. McLerran for his leadership in scientifically assessing the potential impacts of large scale mining on the region.
As the state's agencies continue to show a lack of leadership and initiative to protect these resources for future Alaskans, I am grateful that McLerran is listening to the concerns of the people of Alaska and Bristol Bay. We have the world's greatest salmon fishing industry, a vibrant sportfishing industry and Alaska Natives who depend on this resource, all of whom deserve a voice in the process.
