Dan Sullivan, head of the Department of Natural Resources, wants to drop the word "conserve" from DNR's mission statement as well as mention of future generations of Alaskans. Leaders of the once world-respected Alaska Department of Fish and Game are desperately dropping science out of their working definition of how to manage wildlife. Gov Parnell's state priority appears to be cutting taxes for oil companies that are already making record profits. State leaders are balking at adequate funding for our children's education.
Conservation, science and education -- these are concepts fundamental to creating a vibrant, healthy, long-term future for this rich state. Alarmingly, these concepts seem to be in the rear-view mirror of many of our key state officials. We need leaders who govern with long-term vision for the majority, not leaders who govern for short-term gains and special interest groups.
It is time for change in Alaska.
