Alaskans should be asking tough questions about mines

When I read the article by Jamey Duhamel from the Mat Valley Coalition ("Mat-Su coal mines would be bad neighbors," Feb. 7) regarding the dangers of coal mines proposed in the Mat-Su, I was surprised and appalled to read all of the comments personally attacking the author for the concerns she raised.

Our society used to be built around civil discourse, but the coal mine proponents seem to be willing to destroy that tradition simply over someone raising questions about what these mines will mean for her family and the future of the region she grew up in.

All Alaskans should be willing to ask tough questions when the government seems to be turning a blind eye to the concerns of its residents. Three new coal mines will dramatically alter the landscape of the Mat-Su.

Asking questions about how the state will prevent the region from turning into the impoverished towns of Appalachia is a healthy exercise, and the DNR needs to come up with some better answers about how it will protect air and water quality in this rapidly growing region.
