Iron Dog team still in race reaches Nome

Of the 31 Iron Dog teams that left Big Lake on Sunday, 27 safely reached Nome, the halfway point of the 2,000-mile snowmachine race to Fairbanks. The all-rookie team of Joseph Brantley and Frank Ferreira was the last Pro class team to arrive, pulling into Nome at 1:09 p.m. Wednesday. Four teams have scratched, which indicates little trouble on the race trail, considering just 12 of 28 teams finished last year's race.

The lead team of Marc McKenna and Dusty VanMeter earned $10,000 for reaching Nome first Tuesday afternoon, and they will be the first to leave Nome when the race officially restarts today at 8 a.m.

Less than three minutes behind McKenna and VanMeter will be second-place team Mike Morgan and Chris Olds, followed by Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad about eight minutes later. After the top five teams have left Nome there will be a 30-minute break before the sixth-place team takes off.

Between Nome and Fairbanks, drivers must take two 10-hour layovers. There will be another restart held in Tanana on Saturday morning, prior to the final 220 miles or so to Fairbanks, where the drivers will cross the finish line.
