According to the IRS, about 5,800 Alaskans who qualified for a refund in 2008 didn't file their taxes. The IRS says the median potential refund is $641.

There is no penalty for not filing if a taxpayer is owed a refund. However, the money becomes U.S. Treasury property after three years.

For those owed a refund, the money could be held if a taxpayer hasn't filed for 2009 or 2010.

The money also could be used to pay overdue child support or delinquent federal debts including student loans.
